The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test (PLAB)

PLAB is test conducted by GMC (General Medical Council) which evaluates the ability to work safely in NHS settings and make sure doctors who qualified abroad (i.e graduated from a medical school outside of the UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland) have the right knowledge and skills set to practice medicine in the UK. So physicians who aspire to practice medicine in the UK must pass the PLAB test and following which they can apply for GMC registration which anyone will need to practice medicine within UK territory.

The PLAB test has two parts:

A) PLAB part 1:

    • It is a written test that is used to assess the candidate’s clinical knowledge in the following categories: Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology/Obstetrics, Pediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology, and Basic Sciences.
    • Duration: Three hours.
    • Questions: 180 questions.
    • Answers: best of five.
    • The results are based on an assessment of three main domains: (Each correct answer is worth one mark, no negative markings applied)
      1. Applying knowledge and experience to clinical practice
      2. Good clinical care: assessment
      3. Good clinical care: management

B) PLAB part 2:

– An Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) that assesses doctors against UK current best practices. It is taken after successfully completing the PLAB part 1 test.
– Assess the candidate’s clinical knowledge in the following station’s categories: Ethical, Pediatrics, Medicine, Gynecology/Obstetrics, Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, psychiatry, Counselling, Angry patients, Breaking Bad news, medical errors, Teaching, Prescription writing.

    • Total exam duration: Three hours and ten minutes.
    • Number of stations: 18 stations (including two rest stations).
    • Station duration: eight minutes (90 seconds gap between the stations).
    • Each station/ scenario is marked in 3 main areas: (total of 12 marks).
      1. Data gathering, technical, and assessment skills (4 marks).
      2. Clinical management skills (4 marks).
      3. Interpersonal skills (4 marks).
    • To successfully pass the exam you need to achieve the pass mark for that day along with passing at least 11 out of 18 stations.

MedictoUK courses are designed to show the standard for each category of PLAB part 1, by conducting online and virtual classroom mock tests that mimic the settings of the actual exam, making learning and recalling important information easier during the preparation.

Simulated Virtual Classroom:
The dates are prefixed and available to book on our website. You can join when dates are open for registration. Mostly it includes a brief introduction, virtual live mock in front of our faculty sitting at your cosy environment (may be from your home or work place), followed by your score and brief explanations and comprehensive discussion of all questions you faced and finally some overall burning pit falls and important passing tips.

Sets of Online mocks:
These are available anytime for you to practice, following which you will get your scoresheet. Then you can access the correct answers and explanations for a limited period of time to give you the best opportunity to prepare for real exam.
This includes various practice sets:

  • Single set: Single set of full mock test and access to answers and explanations will be available for 24 hours.
  • Sets of five: 5 sets of full mock test and access to answers and explanations will be available for 5 days.
  • Sets of ten: 10 sets of full mock test and access to answers and explanations will be available for 10 days.

Test results with automated feedback will be available after the exam. Feedback by faculty will be provided at specific dates and times as mentioned in the table above. Attending the feedback is optional but this will provide an opportunity to listen to explanations and tips on some of the more tricky questions from our experienced faculty. Also the option to ask questions to the faculty will be there.
